Bodrum's Historic Windmills to be Restored
Visitors to the Bodrum Peninsula will soon have even more to enjoy as authorities are looking to save and restore the area's historic windmills to their former beauty.
Boasting, some say, the best views of Bodrum the deplorable situation of the eight historical windmills, which have been used for 400 years and are visited by thousands of tourists each year, has inspired the creation of a new foundation, which plans to take the problem to the Culture and Tourism Ministry. The Bodrum Peninsula Promotion Foundation, BOYTAV, will prepare and present a project to the Ministry and are aiming to preserve the windmills and restore their original charm.
Mehmet Kocadon, chairman of BOYTAV, said: "Because of bureaucracy, windmills could not be condemned and taken under protection until now. We will change the deplorable situation of the windmills with our projects. Municipalities have also started working for condemnation". "Visited by millions of tourists, the windmills will be a brand and symbol of our city like the Bodrum Castle, the Tomb of King Mousolos and Myndos Gate."
It is hoped that the windmills will be put to public use next year.
