The History of Arcos de la Frontera
Ever-popular throughout Spain's history, Arcos de la Frontera has been somewhere of political and historical importance, due to the nature of it's geography. The town was originally habited by Romans, who named it Arx arcis, meaning 'high fortress'. It was then taken over by the German 'Visigoths', before Muslim dominance in the 8th century.
Having been a Muslim kingdom for many years, King Alfonso X exiled the Muslims in 1264, and gave the town back to the Spaniards, and it has stayed as such ever since.
