Healthcare
Healthcare in Spain is of a very high standard. Nationals of countries in the European Union can get medical care free of charge, with the relevant paperwork (such as an E111 form). Private health insurance is highly recommended, it can cost around £50 for one year's insurance, so it's well worth it.No jabs or innoculations are needed to travel to Spain, although if you have any questions or queries, you can call the NHS on 0845 4647.
Whilst in Spain it is imperative that you take precautions against sunburn and sunstroke. Sunstroke is a result of the body's temperature mechanisms failing to work; some of the symptoms are fatigue, a headache, rapid breathing, dizziness and muscle cramps. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, and/or hot, red skin, no sweating, high body temperature or loss of consciousness you must seek medical attention immediately.
Precautions against sunstroke include drinking plenty of water throughout the day, staying out of the sun between 11-3 o'clock and wearing a hat.
Emergencies
The number to call an ambulance is 061 if you need one. The hospitals in Spain are required to treat you if it's an emergency, whether you can pay for the treatment or not.
Hospitals
Should you, or one of your party members, have to visit a hospital in an emergency, ensure that someone gives the hospital the patient's details, such as name, nationality, passport number and the details of health insurance, if available. Sit tight, and wait for your call; 'familia de (patient name)', which will be called on the doctors' say so.
Pharmacies
The pharmacies in Spain are very good at dishing out advice, and medication over-the-counter. There's always a pharmacy open - if you find one but it's shut, the name of the nearest open pharmacy should be stuck on the door.
