Transport in Altinkum
Transport in Altinkum is quite straightforward. If you own a Marina Vista or Viva Mar property, you are at liberty to use the shuttle service which runs between the developments and the centre of Altinkum. If you are wanting transport to travel elsewhere, there are several car hire companies in Altinkum, such as 'Holiday Cars', located in Bodrum airport, or 'Gordion', in the town centre, which offer good rates.
The 'dolmus' (pronounced 'dolmush') service is another cheap and easy option for transport in Altinkum. Literally meaning "stuffed", a dolmus is a minibus of a sort, which runs along set routes picking people up and dropping them off as they wish. They are a great, convenient form of transport in Altinkum, and great for your wallet too, as they cost very little; between one and three lira depending on your desired distance.
To stop a dolmus, just signal as you would a taxi, and jump on. When at your destination, you can literally just yell stop, or 'inecek var' (meaning 'someone's getting off here') and stop it will. If in doubt just do as the locals do and you'll be laughing. The dolmuses are a great way to travel short distances; although not incredibly comfortable, they are cheap and definitely an experience!
To pay, just tell the driver your destination and pass forward a few low denomination bills and your change will be passed back to you. If you sit near the front you'll be responsible for relaying money and destinations from more rear passengers to the driver, and returning their change. Not the easiest task in the world so those after an easy life look for a seat near to the back of the dolmus.
If you want transport to Bodrum, travelling by boat is just as easy, if not easier, than by road, and is certainly far more enjoyable. Just go to any of the beaches to find out more about boat runs to Bodrum, or elsewhere.
Travelling by bus is a favourable option, especially for your wallet! Altinkum's main bus stop is at the beach end of Ataturk Boulevard, and there are number of routes to choose from. A free bus is available to transport you to 'third beach', which is located towards the habour end of the resort, and of course, taxis are another form of transport in Altinkum.
For day trips to such sightseeing attractions as Ephesus and Pamukkale, the tour operators will probably have their own transport to and from the attraction.
Scooter hire is available from many of the car hire shops, and lastly, taxis are a useful way to get around Altinkum. As you would at home, check that the taxi is a real taxi, and that the driver has ID.
