There are a number of security forces in Turkey, although you needent trouble yourself with trying to understand and remember which is which.
It is, however, worth remembering that it is compulsory to carry idenficiation on you at all times, and it is not uncommon to have you vehicle stopped for a random check.
Although not compulsory, it is a good idea to ask permission before taking photographs of people, and it is forbidden to photographs of military institutions.
The 'Polis', who wear a blue uniform, are the everyday security force in towns and cities. They are happy to answer questions about directions and such like, and create a presence which makes the streets safe.
Thanks to a high security presence in Turkey, street crime other than pickpocketing is rare, however it is still important to keep your wits about you and act with common sense. Don't carry valuables or a huge amount of cash on you and if you do have to, keep everything hidden.
Also in towns are the 'Belediye Zabitasi', who wear navy-blue. This security force patrols the markets and such like to ensure the shopkeepers and tradesman aren't ripping tourists off and as such you should approach them if you have a complaint.
On a serious note, it is absolutely illegal to insult Turkey, Turkishness or Ataturk and if you do so you should be prepared to accept the consequences. However the Turks are very tolerant and laid-back so if you behave you'll enjoy your stay there.
Be aware of touts. Granted, sometimes the tout will lead you to a better deal, be it cheaper or better quality than the original. However, the majority of the time the touts will just lead you to a hotel who pays the tout a hefty commission, and will then charge you the price of the room, plus the commission, for a room which isn't what you wanted.
This occurs with things other than accommodation, including sightseeing, day tours, transport and more, so keep your wits about you, politely turn down any offers and you'll be fine.
Women travelling alone should, as always, be wary and stay alert, advice to avoid unwanted attention from Turkish men includes avoid eye-contact, and look and act confidently and don't carry many valuables.
Generally, if you keep your wits about you, you'll stay safe in Turkey.
